Of wisdom loss and wisdom gain...

    Count backwards from ten....nine....eight....sev.....

This morning was rather eventful as I had my wisdom teeth removed. It's not the greatest use of my vacation time, but it had to be done. Evidently for once in my life, my mouth is not big enough...

I am taking Percocet, a very nice painkiller which also makes me a bit dizzy. I don't mind though. As long as there is minimal pain, that's good. Oh, and don't show me any needles. Thank you.   The Nitrous Oxide (N2O), also known as laughing gas, had utterly no effect upon me. The general anesthetic, however.....One minute I am wondering how it would feel to slowly lose consciousness, and the next, I am waking up in a strange chair with weirdos staring at me. I just hope I wasn't drooling while I was out. I would not have known; my whole mouth was numbed. (a VERY unusual experience)

I had the whole day to watch the telly and sleep. My best friend, Stephanie Baugh, came over and brought ice cream with her, bless her heart. One of the downsides is that everything on TV suddenly looks absolutely delicious. The bacon and avocado burgers, the chicken alfredo, even IHop's unlimited pancakes looked mouth-watering. All because you cannot have or chew them. I got lime Jell-o, berry cheesecake ice cream, juice, and raviolis. Not too bad, actually, but not exactly what I wanted after fasting for 15 hours.

For those of you who are familer with Westminster Seminary California, an announcement: This Friday and Saturday is the Calvin Conference. Speakers include Dr. R. Scott Clark, Dr. Robert Godfrey, Dr. Micheal Horton, and Dr. Hywel Jones. (pronouced 'How-wel) So join us for an informative and enjoyable time of fellowship. Seats are almost gone, so hustle your mouses and go to the Calvin Conference Web-page here.
For those of you who will not be able to make it, keep in tune with Dr. Clark's Blog, the Heidelblog.

I will, of course, be at said conference, most likely taking photos and listening to the outstanding speakers. I hope to see you there!

    Wow....that took awhile....

Ok, people, so I'm finally back....shocking, I know.

My last few posts mentioned colleges; well, I am in the midst of applying to about six different ones:

    Georgetown (1st choice)
    Dartmouth (2nd choice)
    UCLA (3rd choice)
    Notre Dame
Emory / Oxford College in GA
    UTexas in Austin

That's my lineup. My majors: Arabic and French, with a minor in Russian. Sweet, I know.

As for the rest of my life, my sister is leaving for her second semester at Eastman school of Music on Saturday. Last semester, she took 21 credits with the result of unprecedented stress levels - for both of us.

I am enjoying my classes at Palomar, but I am ready to leave for a higher university. (turns out, both Georgetown and Dartmouth have fencing clubs!!!) Last semester I took Arabic 101 (it was a whopping 6 units!!) and will be taking Arabic 102 this spring. It is so much fun!! I love writing from right to left in a squiggly script that no one understands!! Yes, this is the perverse pleasure I take from learning new languages.
This summer, I took the Boot Camp Greek course at Westminster Seminary California. Yes, that's right, the crazy hard summer Greek class. It was FABULOUS. It was just as hard as predicted, and even though I petered out a bit in the last couple of days, it was totally worth it. 4 weeks of intensive language learning is the best method ever devised. (the worst too, but for other, lazier reasons...lol)

Besides all that, I have discovered the joy of mobility; I have had my license for half a year (at least) and can drive myself anywhere. It's fantastic, and very useful, especially as my mother recently got a job and is working 9 to 5.

Christmas was very lucrative; I got the first two seasons of Doctor Who!! Seriously one of the best presents (besides throwing knives...) that you could get!

I promise to update soon once the college madness is over and done, but for now, that's all, folks! (I really want to make those porky pig noises now....lol!)

  • poem.

    Oh, la nuit est parfaite,
    la nuit, empêchant la chaleur,
la nuit qui rafraichit la terre,
    la noirceur défie le soleil.

    Oh, comme le terrain pavoise,
    le terrain, dormant en paix,
    le terrain rel
    ève les mains,
    les cieux sondent leur voix.

    Oh, les étoiles sont merveilleuses,
les étoiles, étincelant avec la feu,
    les étoiles qui donne l'espoir,
vous, lune, êtes cruelle, pas douce.

Oh, la chérie lune est glacé,
    la lune, illuminant le chemin,
    la lune est joie soi-même,
    que la nuit viendrait; arrivez!

    Translation:

Oh, how perfect is the night
the night that stills the heat,
the night that cools the earth,
    darkness defies the light.

    Oh, how the lands rejoice,
The lands that sleep in peace,
    the lands with lifted hands,
the heavens sound out their voice.

Oh, how wondrous are the stars,
the stars that gleam with fire,
the stars that give men hope,
yet, you, moon, are bitter, not sweet.

Oh, how soft but icy is the moon,
the moon that lights the path,
    the moon is joy itself,
Oh, would that the night come soon!

Next step in the recovery stage

I have recently been having lessons with a violist up in LA. He's been working with me to improve my posture, playing, etc. Anyway, the exciting news: I'm getting some new music! This is really great because while I have been recovering, I haven't been playing anything except Schradieck, Kreutzer, Flesch, and Bach. (pretty mild stuff)  Now I will be playing Rachmaninoff Vocalise 34, Handel Concerto in B minor, and the Hoffmeister Concerto! I'm so psyched! Progress is being made, and  it feels good!
As for my Academic news, I am LOVING my French class at Cal State. The Prof is wonderful and really makes us think. (and I have another paper due soon...lol)
I've been applying for various scholarships, the most recent of which has been a scholarship to a summer program at Stanford. I just submitted the application on Monday, so my days are not filled with much nerve-wracking hysteria anymore.   Now I'm just waiting tensely for a response....

Now, Colleges: The big 'C' word....hmmm....where do I start?
I've been looking into different colleges, trying to decide my future by a few lousy websites. Arrgh. I've been thinking more and more about Chapman University, as I am taking lessons with the Viola professor. I'm really interested in languages, though. So I've been battling with my two sides: Music vs. Languages. Tough, no? I know I won't be able to find a school that teaches both equally well, so I have to decide what is more important. As my Father put it: "If someone put a gun to your ribs, which would you choose?" I said that I'd probably end up with a bullet in my rib cage. Yup, it's that tricky. *sigh*
